Lynne Cook was born in St. Louis, MO.. She had a talent for drawing from an early age. Inspired by the resin jewelry her father fabricated she began to carve "Styrofoam-like" oil tank insulation, which he created, into various forms. In 1972 she won the St. Louis Mayfair exhibition for a walnut carving. In 1981, Lynne moved to Mty CA.. She graduated from University of Santa Cruz where she studied sculpture with Jack Zajack and received the honorary Fifth Year Art Program. She continued experimenting with different mediums, and occasionally having shows and doing portraits on commission. "I found that I could make a living as a portrait artist, but it was not my favorite format". During a return trip to Europe she participated in a group show in Copenhagen and spent time in Italy, Germany and Belgium before returning to Monterey where she worked at the Monterey Sculpture Center. In 1989 she apprenticed under internationally known artist, Eyvind Earle, who has been called the father of designed realism. Lynne Cook worked with Eyvind transcribing his paintings into serigraphs, arranging book layouts, and helping set up art shows for over 13 years. In the years since Eyvind's death, Ms. Cook has stayed on with Earle Studios helping to manage further production of the estate's editions. Through this time Lynne has created several of her own serigraphs while continuing to paint; and sculpt in ceramic, resin, stone, wood and bronze. Her bronze works are what she now primarily shows. "I'm constantly fascinated by the way that all beings exhibit certain behavioral tendencies; As adults we often have learned to cover our immediate reactions, where as children and animals allow these tendencies to be more transparent. In my artwork, I like to capture emotion. Simultaneously for me, art is an emotional release and a mirror of what I'm experiencing at any given moment. I'm also intrigued by Symbolism, which has a role in some of my art. Carl Jung's study of archetypes and the individuation of symbols is really interesting to me. Art can be like entering a different dimension which is somewhat like dreaming. Awake or asleep, I watch it unfold, often having no idea how it will end or continue..." |
